What ho, blogizens! So far, my informal poll-that's-not-really-a-poll poll on topics people would like to see has indicated that the general experience of being an OM is one of the main topics of interest, along with opinion on game-design issues. Keep 'em coming!
This week's question is one which I hope to be able to stop being asked soon! Not that I mind people asking. "Do you have a doll?" It's usually followed by "when you have a doll, can I have one?" The short answers here would be "Not yet" and "Maybe. We'll see. I don't really know yet."
Longer answer: No, I do not have a doll yet. This isn't because Three Rings has discontinued OM doll trinkets! Quite the opposite. It's just that there's a lot of stuff going on backstage at the moment which is keeping everyone very busy, and in the grand scheme of things, new content which is going to be useable by everyone has a higher priority than a trinket which not very many people are going to have. I did offer to draw it myself, but after they saw my portfolio, they said "Ha. No, no, dear, we can't have you embarrassing the company" and then I never heard anything back. I wonder what that meant?
I've been informed that the design of a doll is a long process in which many pains are taken to ensure that the doll appears to have clothes on. Since I favor short dress bottoms, this is vital.
One pirate on Sage did draw me his concept of what my doll would look like; I'm going to see if I can get his permission to post it here at some point. It was very cute and included my favorite colors, and made me very happy!
With regards to how to win one of my dolls, I still don't really know. Each OM has discretion as to when they award a doll to a player, and I know OMs who have given them to people for something as simple as a player being kind, and I know OMs who have never given a doll to anyone. I'm pretty certain that I will be giving out a couple as event prizes, but I'm not sure which events for! It's a bit hard at the moment as I'd be giving people potential pixels, rather than actual pixels. "Yeah! That was great! I'll give you something. Sometime. Eventually. Yeah. I have to, er, go over there now."
As Hephaestus pointed out, I'm very much a hippie tree-hugger sensitive New Agey kind of OM (though I was purposefully trying to be a bit over-the-top with the granola. Though honestly, would you want to eat any food that was made of inorganic material? Rocks and such? I didn't think so!), so I may try to come up with something based on that. I do know one thing - whatever I come up with, it will be something to be proud of.
Next week on QOTW: Great Responsibility.
