Here Be Puzzle Pirate Adventures

The big news in this release is the addition of Puzzle Pirate Adventures to the game.

Adventure Scene

As alluded to in Captain Cleaver's recent forum post, perhaps the most exciting part of Adventures is not what it includes now, which is essentially an easier way for new players to get access to the game, but what it has the potential to be in the future.

Saying that, it's perhaps worth reviewing what was added, as it represents some fairly impressive changes to the game. These include:

  • The ability to play the game in a browser, getting the elements from the game that are needed "on the fly". This changes getting the game from a 45 megabyte endeavor to something like 3 megabytes of waiting time for the new player. Blood has been spilled to achieve things less challenging.
  • The basic concept of narrative: The game now includes the ability to create gates and challenges that must be completed before a pirate can continue.
  • A system for playing the adventures that allows pirates to grow to teams of four without disrupting play. In addition to thinking a great deal about how this would work with NPP swabbies, it also obliged the dev. team to work out how best to create and manage invitations, both for existing and potentially new Puzzle Pirate players

Great achievements, each one! Everyone on the development team deserves a (second) pirate hat. Maybe even a monkey.

Rolled together, these additions allow us to create things that have much more narrative content than is present in the game itself. There are risks associated with this. A crew of industrious pirates will always be able to outstrip our ability to create new content that's fun to play. And, perhaps more important, it is generally more fun to pit one's wits against real people rather than challenges we might think up. We don't for a second believe that Adventures will create an alternative to pillaging. In the long run, this inclines us to believe:

  • The "library" of Puzzle Pirate Adventures will be engaging and fun for players looking for adventure for a specific period of time and, particularly, to collect the trophies and other items from all of the adventures.
  • In the medium term, it is likely that we will want to be able to included as broad an array of ideas and narratives as we can in the Adventures that are available to players.
  • In the longer term, Adventures will need to have relevancy to the vibrant and changing environment in the downloaded game. There are a number of ways we can achieve this, many of which are still under consideration here. While no decisions have yet been made, it's clear that Adventures will need to be complementary to the important pillaging/voyaging aspect of the game.

These points are, of course, all highly speculative and open to interpretation. This is intended. We still hove to our general policy of encouraging rampant speculation and paroxysm of pirate-related excitement. Check back later for more!

I have to applaud the long awaited unveiling of the adventures. However - and this may be entirely due to beta, as well as working out the kinks with different versions of Firefox, IE, etc... But I haven't yet experienced a smooth run of it in any browser. Is there any plans to also include an in-client option that can be utilized instead of a web browser, should someone so wish to do so? If not, then I would be most appreciative of a short blurb explaining that. Having said that - My thanks to you as an avid consumer of OOO products going on about 3 years now. Adventures are still in beta, but I was impressed watching the changes yesterday while I played. The first set of adventures were easy to complete and it would be nice to see a progression of difficulty in the adventures for more advanced players. One thing I really liked about the adventures, and I'm not sure if this was intended or not, was the potential to guide less experienced players in the skills needed to master puzzles. That is - the importance of teaming in rumble/SF (and how to do it), the importance of bilging efficiently and tricks to pulling up treasure chests while THing, even when they are in inconvenient locations. These are things that may not be easy for the newer player to learn, depending on the type of crew they are in and the abilities of the senior officers to teach in a method they can receive. The adventures seemed a "safe" place to learn those skills. I'm looking forward to seeing what more the YPP staff puts forward for adventures in upcoming releases!

I must say I found it GREAT. It's awesome. I always though how we needed some things like treasure maps and some batlles in wich we didn't want the PoE, but wanted to beat a dammed eye-patched pirate who crossed the line and made us angry, and the adventures do it perfectly. I'm eager to see what comes next. Also, I began thinking about the so many possibilities. I'm already thinking on how it would be like to write tales based on the adventures, and how the inn-talk could become different when people begig talking of how they grabbed that buryed treasure under the nose of another pirate. I'm really anxious. Ja-ne. Bug-less days to Y!PP.

What I'm hoping for is a chance to build this into the yohoho tools map editor. This would give map makers something more interesting to build than simpmle (and not so simple) islands.

I would have really liked to get the adventures to work, but I have been trying to load the page several times both yesterday and today, and I never succeeded. Plus, I would suggest to add a loading bar to the interface; this would at least give an idea to the user about whether it is actually loading or what. I am a fan of PP, and would have loved to see the adventures... I have unfortunately to say that I am quite disappointed, and I hope that you solve the problems soon. I'd like to stress the idea of the loading bar as well, as I think it is quite important to have one.

I have yet to experience the Adventures due to having Dial up. Everytime I have tried to load it, it has aborted after a few minutes and when I retry it still does not work. I know its only in Beta and your still improving it but do you think dial up players will be able to join in the fun any time soon?

This pp adventure is nice, but i think you shoude continue improving the old pp - when ye started bigger updates the game became amaizing, but now with no new stuff.. Its getting boring. Like the grand crafting puzzle- its more than half year and you still didint reliese it.. O, and the adventures load to slow, my pirate didint save, it took 20minutes to thest get to the pirate making screen.. Thes quit it and start big updates for the old pp.

I ? the adventure and looking forward to more. I have one suggestion....Since it shows us as being logged in on regular PP when we are logged into adventures, I think we should be able to access our homes, stalls, etc.....Crisscross the regular world with adventures, you might say. Make them both accessible from one location.

I really enjoyed the Adventure and hope there will be more of them. I could only play the Adventure by using the link on the Notice Board, Java could not load properly using the other links. I've been reading through old forum posts about Azure and the way the pirates lived in those days. Would it be possible to have an adventure that will make us go back in time... on Azure :) If there are more adventures, will they be available for a short time and disappear or will we be able to play them as we wish any time we wish on a long period of time? Thanks OOO for all the work ye put in this game, I really enjoy playing it.
